The only Indian in Rijeka
Rijeka, Croatia, Feburary/March 2016
{art project} [performance]
A series of photographs taken in the city of Rijeka
The consideration of identity became suddenly evident when I travelled to Rijeka, Croatia as part of a collaborative art project in 2016. The observation that I may be the only Indian in the small town interested me.
As a response to this I took a series of photographs, walking around the city, while I held a piece of paper in my hand with the words “The only Indian in Rijeka”.
The activity of observing, or paying attention, is one of the main concerns in my work. I have always been interested in the gaze of the other, spaces of behaviour, and how these define identity. What am I to others? What am I to myself? And how does my identity transform under different gazes?
